History is interwoven with sailing ships of all kinds – through centuries of exploration, colonization, naval battles, and world-wide trade. Take an interactive look at these magnificent ships, mixing history with excitement and adventure:

- Explore the travels of Christopher Columbus, Sir Francis Drake, and others
- What makes a sailboat sail?
- What’s the difference between a schooner and a clipper, a topsail and a mainsail?
Learning Objectives:
Week 1
- Become familiar with the idea of a sailing ship
- Learn the main parts of a sailing ship and their function
- Study the basic concept of how a sailing ship works
- Become familiar with some of the terms that are used to describe a ship
Week 2
- Investigate some of the earliest known sailing ships
- Learn which civilizations used these early sailing ships
- Become familiar with the geographical location of these early civilizations
- Discover early forms of sailing navigation
Week 3
- Investigate the sailing ships used by explorers
- Develop an understanding of the uses of sailing ships in this era
- Study the ships used in Colonial America
Week 4
- Learn about clipper ships – their design and development
- Become familiar with more of the parts of a sailing ship and investigate some of the sailing terms used around the world
- Learn more about the tall ships
- Develop an understanding of the cause of the end of the era of large sailing ships
The Sailing Ships study is part of the Unit Study Adventure series, designed to be a four-week study for grades K-12. The daily lesson plans have been written in two levels in this study:
Lower Level (elementary grades)
Upper Level (junior/senior high grades)
