We can read original newspaper accounts of the famous “Golden Spike” and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, and so much more!

Learning Objectives:

Week 1

  • Become familiar with the concept and importance of transportation
  • Learn about early transportation in America
  • Become familiar with the basic components of a train
  • Study some of the key inventors of early steam engines

Week 2

  • Become familiar with a steam engine and how it operates
  • Develop an understanding of the impact of the steam engine
  • Learn about the introduction of trains to America
  • Study some of the key people involved in the development of trains and their use in America

Week 3

  • Become familiar with impact of trains on America and Americans
  • Learn about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad
  • Study some of the American railroad legends
  • settlement.

Week 4

  • Become familiar with the use of trains in modern America
  • Learn about some of the spin-off developments from the growth of the railway
  • Develop an understanding of the rise and decline of railroads in America
  • Study some of the key people involved in the growth era of railroads

The Trains study is part of the Unit Study Adventure series, designed to be a four-week study for grades K-12. The daily lesson plans have been written in two levels in this study:

Lower Level (elementary grades)
Upper Level (junior/senior high grades)

By having these two levels for each day, the whole family can learn together. This study also includes Trains Notebook Pages.
