What is the “gait” of a horse? How did horses impact American history? From the early horse-drawn chariots to the swift couriers used to carry battle plans, horses have helped expand civilization. From Egyptian pharaohs to Alexander the Great, from Leonardo da Vinci to Justin Morgan, history is filled with the hoof prints of horses and wonderful tales of adventure and excitement.

Learning Objectives:

Week 1

  • Develop knowledge of the history of horses.
  • Investigate the animal classification of horses.
  • Develop an understanding of the head anatomy of horses.
  • Learn about the breeds of horses.
  • Become familiar with the special vocabulary used when talking about horses (lingo).

Week 2

  • Develop knowledge of the history of horses.

  • Become more familiar with the special vocabulary used when talking about horses (lingo).
  • Find out about famous horses in history.

Week 3

  • Learn more about the breeds of horses.
  • Continue to develop an understanding of the anatomy of horses.
  • Learn about the equipment used for riding.
  • Study the different kinds of horseback riding.
  • Become more familiar with the special vocabulary used when talking about horses (lingo).
  • Study the care of horses.
  • Become familiar with some basic safety rules about horses.
  • Learn about the gaits of a horse.

Week 4

  • Continue to develop an understanding of the anatomy of horses.
  • Learn more about the breeds of horses.
  • Study more about the care of horses.
  • Investigate some of the equipment used with horses.
  • Finish our study of the special vocabulary used when talking about horses (lingo).

The Horses study is part of the Unit Study Adventure series, designed to be a four-week study for grades K-12. The daily lesson plans have been written in two levels in this study:
