All aboard! Come along and join us in this engaging unit study, Trains! We’ll learn about the history of trains and about steam engines and inventors. With the Internet, we will watch train cams from around the world, visit railroad museums, and see all kinds of trains and rolling stock. We can read original newspaper accounts of the famous “Golden Spike” and the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, and so much more!

Learning Objectives:
Week 1
- Become familiar with the concept and importance of transportation
- Learn about early transportation in America
- Become familiar with the basic components of a train
- Study some of the key inventors of early steam engines
Week 2
- Become familiar with a steam engine and how it operates
- Develop an understanding of the impact of the steam engine
- Learn about the introduction of trains to America
- Study some of the key people involved in the development of trains and their use in America
Week 3
- Become familiar with impact of trains on America and Americans
- Learn about the building of the Transcontinental Railroad
- Study some of the American railroad legends settlement.
Week 4
- Become familiar with the use of trains in modern America
- Learn about some of the spin-off developments from the growth of the railway
- Develop an understanding of the rise and decline of railroads in America
- Study some of the key people involved in the growth era of railroads
The Trains study is part of the Unit Study Adventure series, designed to be a four-week study for grades K-12. The daily lesson plans have been written in two levels in this study:
Lower Level (elementary grades)
Upper Level (junior/senior high grades)
By having these two levels for each day, the whole family can learn together. This study also includes Trains Notebook Pages.
