The study of space opens up a child’s world as well as his imagination and curiosity about everything that is in the night sky.

We will study telescopes, remote telescopes in space (the Hubble), satellites that circle the Earth, probes that travel to the outer reaches of our solar system and beyond, orbiting observatories (the International Space Station), as well as space travel past, present, and future. We will learn about planets, stars, moons, meteors, constellations, galaxies, black holes, and so much more!

Learning Objectives:

Week 1

  • Develop an understanding of the Universe and the Earth's place in it.
  • Learn about the Sun and the basics of our solar system.
  • Study the planets Venus and Mercury.
  • Study some of the early astronomers and the history of astronomy.

Week 2

  • Become familiar with the planets Earth and Mars.
  • Learn about stars and constellations.
  • Continue the study of famous astronomers.
  • Develop an understanding of seasons on Earth.
  • Investigate Earth’s Moon and its phases.

Week 3

  • Develop an understanding of galaxies.
  • Investigate the planets Jupiter and Saturn.
  • Learn about the requirements to become an astronaut.
  • Become familiar with comets.
  • Study some of the key people involved in the exploration of space.

Week 4

  • Develop an understanding of satellites.
  • Study the planets Neptune and Uranus.
  • Learn about asteroids, meteors and meteoroids.
  • Become familiar with space exploration and astronauts.

The Space study is part of the Unit Study Adventure series, designed to be a four-week study for grades K-12. The daily lesson plans have been written in two levels in this study:

Lower Level (elementary grades)
Upper Level (junior/senior high grades)

By having these two levels for each day, the whole family can learn together.
